Programming in 2025

November 16, 2024

In 2025 programming will change drammatically. “We will be able to write code with our thoughts. No more keyboards, no more screens. Just a simple thought and the code will be written.” says my github copilot assistant… well, I think that’s a bit too optimistic. But I do think that we will use more and more AI tools to help us write code and do other tasks which will make us more productive and creative. This will allow us to communicate more with stakeholders/users/clients and provide better solutions to them.

The IT landscape will keep changing and with a faster rate then before and it will be more important then ever to keep learning and adapting to new technologies. Having knowledge of AI and machine learning will be a must for every developer. Not just to use it, but also to understand how it works and how it can be used to solve problems when building solutions for our clients.

However, as a developer, you need to keep on understanding all of the fundamentals of programming and NOT just let LLMs solve our problems and implement our code.. you will still need to understand it, improve it where necessary and make sure that it is secure and reliable. Don’t ever rely on LLMs only!

I hope that we also will finally see a shift to using more visual programming tools from within our IDEs. I think that the current text-based programming languages are a bit outdated and that we can do better (I am doing resarch to this myself, you can find more info about it here: Code flow canvas). I’m looking forward to see what the future will bring us.
